Sichuan Lovage (Ligusticum chuanxiong, also known as Chuanxiong) is a well-known herb in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM). Its use for treating or supporting bleeding (external) is primarily grounded in traditional practices. According to classical TCM texts, Chuanxiong is most commonly used to invigorate the blood, dispel wind, and alleviate pain, particularly in cases of blood stasis and related disorders. Although Chuanxiong is more often associated with promoting blood flow and treating headaches, dysmenorrhea, and cardiovascular conditions, some traditional sources mention its application in topical formulations for external injuries, bruising, and minor bleeding. The herb is thought to promote circulation and support the healing of tissues, which may help stop bleeding indirectly by facilitating the resolution of blood stasis and reducing swelling.

However, there is little to no robust scientific research or high-quality clinical trials confirming its efficacy specifically for external bleeding. Most modern pharmacological studies focus on its effects on blood flow, anti-inflammatory action, and neuroprotection. Thus, its use for external bleeding remains mainly within the realm of traditional herbal application, and the evidence supporting this specific use is moderate within traditional sources, but lacking scientific validation.
