Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Silverweed (Potentilla anserina) has a long history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, particularly for treating external bleeding. Folk healers historically applied poultices or infusions of the leaves to wounds, cuts, or abrasions to help stop bleeding and promote healing. The astringent properties of the plant, attributed to its high tannin content, are believed to constrict blood vessels and tissue, thus reducing blood flow and assisting in clot formation. These traditional uses are documented in several historical herbals and ethnobotanical records from the British Isles and continental Europe.

However, scientific validation of Silverweed's efficacy for external bleeding is limited. While the astringent effect of tannins is well-known and supported in phytochemical literature, there are no high-quality clinical trials or modern pharmacological studies specifically investigating Silverweed for this indication. Most evidence remains anecdotal or rooted in traditional practice, with only a few in vitro studies suggesting some antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory activity. As such, its use for external bleeding is justified by tradition with weak direct scientific evidence.
