Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Smartweed (Persicaria hydropiper), also known as water pepper, has a long history of traditional use for external bleeding. Historical records and ethnobotanical sources indicate that Native Americans and early European settlers in North America used crushed leaves or poultices of smartweed to help stop minor bleeding and promote wound healing. The plant contains astringent compounds such as tannins, which can help constrict tissues and blood vessels, thereby reducing bleeding when applied externally. However, while these traditional uses are well-documented, modern scientific validation is limited. There are few, if any, rigorous clinical studies evaluating the efficacy or safety of smartweed for treating external bleeding in humans. Most supporting evidence comes from in vitro studies or animal research that demonstrate the astringent and hemostatic properties of certain constituents. Overall, the use of smartweed for external bleeding is primarily justified by traditional knowledge and historical use rather than robust scientific validation.
