Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Speedwell (Veronica officinalis) has a history of use in traditional European herbal medicine, including as a topical remedy for minor wounds and bleeding. Folk healers often utilized poultices or infusions of Speedwell applied externally with the belief that it could help stop bleeding and promote wound healing. The rationale was likely based on astringent properties attributed to the plant, which might help constrict tissues and blood vessels, thereby reducing bleeding. However, there is minimal documentation of this use in authoritative historical herbal texts compared to other more commonly used hemostatic herbs. Furthermore, there is no robust scientific evidence or clinical trials supporting Speedwell's efficacy in treating external bleeding. Most modern herbal references do not list Speedwell as a primary remedy for hemostasis. As such, the use of Speedwell for external bleeding is considered to be supported only by limited traditional anecdotal accounts, and the overall quality and quantity of evidence is low.
