Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Stellaria dichotoma, known as "Yin Chai Hu" (银柴胡) in traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), has a long history of use in East Asian herbal practices. Although it is more commonly used for conditions such as fever, night sweats, and malnutrition in children, there are records in classical Chinese materia medica that support its external use for minor bleeding and wounds. The use is primarily based on traditional knowledge rather than modern scientific validation. According to the Chinese Pharmacopoeia and other classical texts such as the Compendium of Materia Medica (Bencao Gangmu), Stellaria dichotoma root may be ground into a powder and applied topically to help stop bleeding from cuts or abrasions. The herb is believed to have cooling and astringent properties, which are thought to help constrict blood vessels and promote clotting. However, there is little to no clinical or pharmacological research in the modern scientific literature confirming its efficacy for this use. Most of the available evidence is anecdotal or comes from historical herbal texts rather than controlled studies. Therefore, its use for treating external bleeding is justified by traditional practice, with a moderate level of traditional evidence but lacking robust scientific support.
