Rating (out of 5): 1

Stereospermum, particularly Stereospermum suaveolens (commonly known as Patala), is an important medicinal plant in traditional systems of medicine such as Ayurveda. Its bark and leaves have been historically utilized for various therapeutic purposes, including the management of bleeding (especially external bleeding such as wounds and cuts). The traditional use is primarily based on its astringent properties, which were believed to help constrict blood vessels and promote clotting, thus arresting bleeding. Various Ayurvedic texts mention Stereospermum as an ingredient in formulations used for “Raktapitta” (bleeding disorders) and wound healing.

However, there is a lack of robust scientific studies or clinical trials that specifically validate the hemostatic (bleeding-stopping) effects of Stereospermum. Some phytochemical analyses have indicated the presence of tannins and flavonoids, compounds known for their astringent action, which might theoretically contribute to its traditional use for bleeding. Nonetheless, these findings are preliminary and do not constitute clinical evidence. To date, the justification for using Stereospermum in bleeding is rooted in traditional practice rather than modern scientific validation.
