Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Stone Root (Collinsonia canadensis) has been used traditionally in North American herbal medicine, especially among Native American and 19th-century Eclectic physicians, to address various conditions, including bleeding (primarily minor external bleeding). The root was sometimes applied as a poultice or wash to minor wounds, cuts, or abrasions to help stop bleeding and promote healing. This use was based on empirical observation rather than scientific study, with herbalists attributing astringent properties to the plant, which might help constrict tissues and reduce minor bleeding.

However, there is minimal scientific evidence to validate these claims. Modern phytochemical analysis has shown that Stone Root contains tannins and saponins, which can have astringent effects, but no controlled studies have demonstrated efficacy for external bleeding. Most references to its use for bleeding come from historical herbal texts rather than clinical research. Thus, while Stone Root’s application for external bleeding is grounded in traditional use, it lacks robust scientific validation, and its efficacy should be regarded as anecdotal rather than proven.
