Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Terminalia species, particularly Terminalia chebula and Terminalia arjuna, have a long history of use in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda and Unani. They have been used topically to support wound healing and manage external bleeding. Traditional texts describe preparations of Terminalia bark or fruit powder applied to wounds to help arrest bleeding, attributed to their astringent properties. The tannins and other polyphenolic compounds present in Terminalia are believed to constrict blood vessels and promote clotting when applied externally.

However, scientific validation for this specific indication is limited. While in vitro and animal studies have demonstrated hemostatic and wound-healing activities for Terminalia extracts—such as increased collagen formation and reduced bleeding time—robust human clinical trials are lacking. The available evidence for external bleeding remains largely anecdotal or based on historical usage, rather than modern scientific validation. Therefore, while there is traditional support for the use of Terminalia in managing external bleeding, the scientific evidence is preliminary, and more research is required to confirm efficacy and safety in clinical settings.
