Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Alchemilla, commonly known as lady's mantle, has a long history of traditional use in European herbal medicine, especially for treating various types of bleeding, including internal bleeding such as menorrhagia (heavy menstrual bleeding) and gastrointestinal bleeding. The herb was cited in medieval and Renaissance herbals for its astringent properties, attributed to its high tannin content, which is thought to help contract tissues and reduce bleeding. Folk practitioners and herbalists often used infusions or decoctions of Alchemilla leaves to manage wounds and bleeding disorders in both women and men. However, while this traditional use is well documented, modern scientific validation is limited. Only a few in vitro studies point to its astringent and anti-inflammatory effects, but there are no robust clinical trials confirming its efficacy for internal bleeding. The evidence remains primarily historical and anecdotal, reflected in its inclusion in traditional pharmacopeias rather than in evidence-based guidelines. Therefore, while Alchemilla is still used in some herbal traditions for bleeding, this use should be approached cautiously due to the lack of rigorous scientific support and potential safety concerns.
