Evidence supporting the use of: Ashitaba
For the body system: Blood
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei) is a plant native to Japan that has been used traditionally in East Asian herbal medicine, particularly in Japanese folk medicine. In traditional contexts, ashitaba has been valued for its purported health benefits, including "blood purification" and supporting blood health. These uses are rooted in broad holistic concepts rather than specific physiological mechanisms recognized by modern science.
Historically, ashitaba’s bright green leaves and yellow sap have been associated with vitality and longevity. Folk practitioners have recommended ashitaba for improving circulation, promoting blood regeneration, and enhancing energy—beliefs reflected in the Japanese concept of “blood building.” However, these claims are primarily anecdotal and based on traditional use rather than direct clinical evidence.
There is some preliminary scientific interest in ashitaba’s bioactive compounds, such as chalcones, which have antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties. However, while these properties are generally beneficial for health, there is currently insufficient direct scientific evidence linking ashitaba consumption to specific improvements in blood parameters or direct support of the hematological (blood) system. Most available studies are in vitro or animal-based and do not specifically address blood system outcomes in humans.
In summary, ashitaba’s use for supporting the blood system is justified by tradition and historical practice, with limited and indirect scientific investigation to date. Robust human clinical studies are lacking.
