Mormon Tea refers to several species of the Ephedra plant, commonly found in the western United States. Traditionally, Native American groups and early settlers, including Mormons, used decoctions of Ephedra stems for various ailments, particularly as a stimulant and for respiratory complaints, but also at times for "purifying the blood." However, there is little scientific or historical documentation specifically supporting its use for the "Blood body system" (i.e., to directly support blood health, circulation, or related parameters). The main active compound, ephedrine, is a known stimulant that can increase heart rate and blood pressure, which may have led to anecdotal beliefs of increased vitality or improved blood flow. Despite these traditional uses, modern clinical studies do not support a direct benefit of Mormon Tea for blood health, and the use of ephedrine-containing supplements is now heavily regulated due to potential cardiovascular risks. Overall, the association of Mormon Tea with supporting the blood is based on traditional use rather than scientific validation, and the strength of evidence is weak.
