Acetylsalicylic acid, commonly known as aspirin, is scientifically validated for the prevention of blood clots, particularly in the context of cardiovascular diseases such as heart attack (myocardial infarction) and ischemic stroke. Aspirin acts as an antiplatelet agent by irreversibly inhibiting the enzyme cyclooxygenase-1 (COX-1) in platelets, thereby reducing the formation of thromboxane A2, a molecule that promotes platelet aggregation and vasoconstriction. This mechanism leads to decreased platelet clumping, which in turn reduces the risk of clot formation in arteries.

Numerous large-scale clinical trials and meta-analyses have demonstrated the efficacy of aspirin in both primary and secondary prevention of cardiovascular events. For example, the Antithrombotic Trialists’ Collaboration meta-analysis showed that long-term aspirin use significantly reduces the risk of serious vascular events in patients with a history of vascular disease. Guidelines from major organizations such as the American Heart Association and the European Society of Cardiology recommend aspirin for secondary prevention in patients with established atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease.

However, the use of aspirin for primary prevention is more nuanced due to the risk of bleeding and is generally reserved for individuals at high cardiovascular risk. Overall, the scientific evidence supporting aspirin’s role in the prevention of blood clots is robust, particularly in secondary prevention settings.
