Chinese Motherwort (Leonurus japonicus, known as "Yi Mu Cao" in traditional Chinese medicine) has a long history of use in East Asian herbal medicine, particularly for gynecological conditions. Traditionally, it is thought to "invigorate blood," "dispel blood stasis," and "regulate menstruation." These concepts correspond loosely to the Western ideas of improving circulation and possibly reducing blood clot formation. In the context of blood clots, Chinese Motherwort has been used in traditional formulas to promote smooth blood flow and prevent stasis, which is believed to contribute to clot formation in traditional Chinese medicine theory.

Scientific studies on Chinese Motherwort's effects on blood coagulation are limited, but some in vitro and animal research suggests that extracts may have mild antithrombotic or anticoagulant properties, such as inhibiting platelet aggregation or affecting fibrinolytic activity. However, clinical trials in humans specifically addressing its efficacy for preventing blood clots are lacking or of low methodological quality. Therefore, while there is a traditional rationale for its use in supporting the prevention of blood clots, robust scientific validation is insufficient at this time, and its use for this purpose should be approached with caution.
