Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Panax pseudoginseng (also known as San Qi or Tienchi ginseng) has a long history of use in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for promoting blood circulation and resolving blood stasis, which includes the prevention and treatment of blood clots. In TCM, it is commonly prescribed to manage internal and external bleeding, bruising, and conditions associated with poor circulation. The herb is believed to "invigorate the blood" and is used in formulas for traumatic injuries and to support cardiovascular health.

Some laboratory and animal studies have explored its effects on platelet aggregation and fibrinolysis, suggesting potential anti-thrombotic activity. However, these preclinical findings are not robustly supported by large-scale clinical trials in humans. Therefore, while there is traditional rationale and limited preclinical evidence for its use in blood clot prevention, scientific validation remains insufficient. Overall, Panax pseudoginseng is primarily justified by traditional use for this indication, with modest supporting evidence from preliminary studies but a lack of rigorous clinical data.
