For the health condition: Blood Clots (prevention of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Sanguisorba, commonly known as burnet, has a long history of use in traditional medicine, particularly in Chinese and European herbal systems. In Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), Sanguisorba officinalis (Di Yu) is primarily valued for its hemostatic properties—meaning it is used to stop bleeding rather than to prevent blood clots. Its traditional application is more related to managing hemorrhages, wounds, and diarrhea. There is limited reference in historical texts to its use for the explicit prevention of blood clots (antithrombotic effects). However, in folk herbalism, plants with astringent and blood-modulating actions are sometimes loosely associated with circulatory health, which might explain a minor traditional rationale for its use in this context.
From a scientific standpoint, there is very little evidence to support the use of Sanguisorba for preventing blood clots. A few in vitro and animal studies have examined its constituents for effects on blood coagulation, but these are preliminary, and clinical trials are lacking. Therefore, while Sanguisorba is entrenched in tradition for bleeding and wound care, its use for blood clot prevention is not robustly supported either by traditional texts or modern research.
