Evidence supporting the use of: Seaweed (unspecified)
For the health condition: Blood Clots (prevention of)
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Seaweed, particularly brown seaweeds such as Undaria pinnatifida (wakame) and Laminaria species, contains bioactive compounds like fucoidans and other sulfated polysaccharides. Recent scientific studies have shown that these compounds can have anticoagulant and antithrombotic properties in vitro and in animal models. For example, fucoidans have been demonstrated to inhibit clot formation by interacting with various steps in the coagulation cascade, sometimes in a manner similar to heparin. Several preclinical studies have shown that oral or injected fucoidans can reduce the risk of blood clot formation in animal models. Some small pilot clinical studies have also observed mild anticoagulant effects in humans, though these are limited in size and scope.
Despite these promising findings, the evidence is still preliminary. There is a lack of large, high-quality human clinical trials demonstrating that seaweed or its extracts can safely and effectively prevent blood clots in the general population. Furthermore, the composition of seaweed products can vary widely, leading to inconsistencies in their effects. For these reasons, while there is a scientific rationale and some early evidence supporting the use of seaweed-derived compounds for blood clot prevention, the evidence is not yet strong. More research, especially in humans, is needed before seaweed can be recommended as a reliable intervention for blood clot prevention.
