Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Baliospermum montanum, commonly known as Danti in Ayurveda, is a medicinal plant that has been traditionally used in Indian systems of medicine. Its roots, in particular, are employed in Ayurvedic formulations for their purgative and anti-inflammatory properties. In Ayurvedic texts, Baliospermum is sometimes indicated for conditions involving the gastrointestinal tract, including the management of piles (hemorrhoids) and bleeding disorders, which can involve blood in the stool. The rationale for its use includes its purported effects on clearing heat and toxins, and its ability to "purge" the intestines, which is believed to help stop bleeding and promote healing of ulcers or inflamed tissue in the digestive tract. However, scientific studies directly evaluating the efficacy of Baliospermum specifically for "blood in stool" (hematochezia or melena) are lacking. The available literature mostly focuses on its general purgative and anti-inflammatory effects, and on its use for related conditions such as hemorrhoids. There are no robust clinical trials or pharmacological studies that confirm its effectiveness or safety for treating blood in stool. Therefore, while its use is supported by traditional knowledge, the evidence base is weak, and caution is warranted.
