Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Belleric myrobalan (Terminalia bellirica), known as "Bibhitaki" in Ayurveda, is traditionally used in various formulations for digestive ailments, including bleeding disorders such as "rakta atisara" (bloody diarrhea) or hematochezia (blood in stool). Classical Ayurvedic texts describe its use for “pitta” and “kapha” imbalances and suggest that it may help manage conditions involving gastrointestinal bleeding, often as part of compound formulations like Triphala. The fruit is believed to have astringent and anti-inflammatory properties, which are thought to help reduce bleeding and soothe the intestinal mucosa.

However, there is very limited scientific research directly evaluating Belleric myrobalan for the treatment of blood in the stool. Most available studies focus on its antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and antioxidant effects, and some animal studies suggest it may have gastroprotective actions. There are no robust clinical trials or direct scientific evidence specifically supporting its efficacy for gastrointestinal bleeding or hematochezia in humans. Therefore, while traditional use is well documented, scientific validation for this specific indication is currently lacking.
