Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Plantago, particularly Plantago major (greater plantain) and Plantago ovata (psyllium), has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems for a variety of gastrointestinal complaints, including symptoms such as blood in stool. In various cultures, Plantago leaves have been applied topically to wounds and taken internally for their purported anti-inflammatory, astringent, and mucilaginous properties. In traditional Chinese medicine and some European folk practices, Plantago is used to "cool the blood" and stop bleeding, which extends to gastrointestinal bleeding or blood in the stool, often presumed to be due to hemorrhoids or minor mucosal irritation.

However, scientific validation specific to the use of Plantago for treating or supporting blood in stool is very limited. Most modern research focuses on Plantago ovata (psyllium) as a soluble fiber supplement for constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, or lowering cholesterol, not for hemostatic effects. There is little direct clinical evidence that Plantago (as leaf, seed, or husk) stops gastrointestinal bleeding or is effective specifically in cases of hematochezia or melena. The rating of 2 reflects the strong traditional use but lack of robust scientific studies to substantiate efficacy for this particular indication. Patients with blood in stool should seek medical evaluation, as this symptom can indicate serious underlying conditions.
