Evidence supporting the use of: Bai ji
For the health condition: Blood Poisoning
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Bai Ji (白芨, Bletilla striata), also known as "Chinese ground orchid," is a traditional Chinese medicinal herb primarily used to stop bleeding, promote wound healing, and reduce swelling. In the context of traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), "Blood Poisoning" does not directly correspond to the biomedical concept of sepsis or blood infection, but may refer to conditions involving toxic heat, abscesses, or severe inflammation. Historically, Bai Ji has been included in some herbal formulas aimed at "clearing heat and resolving toxicity," which could be loosely associated with infections or inflammatory conditions. However, its main documented traditional use remains for bleeding disorders, such as nosebleeds, coughing up blood, or external wounds.
There is insufficient scientific evidence to support the use of Bai Ji for blood poisoning as understood in modern medicine (i.e., sepsis). While some laboratory studies suggest Bai Ji possesses mild antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory effects, these findings are preliminary and not specific to systemic infections of the blood. Clinical trials validating its efficacy for treating sepsis or serious bloodstream infections are lacking. Therefore, its use for "blood poisoning" is based on traditional rationale rather than scientific validation, and the strength of evidence is low.
