The use of the Indian Kinotree (Pterocarpus marsupium) for treating "blood poisoning" (a historical term commonly referring to sepsis or severe systemic infections) is primarily rooted in traditional medicine systems such as Ayurveda. In these systems, the kinotree's resin and extracts have been employed for their perceived antimicrobial and astringent properties, which practitioners believed could help in cleansing the blood and combating infections. However, there is little to no robust scientific evidence from controlled clinical trials to substantiate these traditional claims, especially with respect to the complex pathophysiology of sepsis or modern definitions of blood poisoning. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that extracts from Pterocarpus marsupium may possess antimicrobial activity, but these findings do not directly translate to efficacy in human systemic infections.
