Evidence supporting the use of: Long pepper
For the health condition: Blood Poisoning
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Indian Long Pepper (Piper longum) has a long history of use in traditional Indian (Ayurvedic) and other Asian medical systems for a variety of ailments, including conditions that might be described as "blood poisoning" (a non-medical term sometimes used for sepsis or systemic infections). In these traditions, long pepper was often included in herbal formulations believed to "purify the blood" or counteract toxins. Its use in this context is primarily based on historical texts and the herb’s general reputation for antimicrobial and stimulant properties.
From a scientific perspective, there is some evidence that Piper longum possesses antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory activities in vitro and in animal models. Certain constituents, such as piperine, have shown inhibitory effects against some bacteria and may modulate immune responses. However, there is no direct clinical evidence supporting the use of Indian Long Pepper for blood poisoning (sepsis) in humans. The traditional use is not corroborated by rigorous human trials or modern medical studies. Thus, its reputation for treating "blood poisoning" remains primarily traditional, with only minimal supporting evidence from preclinical research but lacking validation in clinical practice or high-quality studies.
