Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Red-Rooted Sage (Salvia miltiorrhiza, also known as Danshen) has been used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) for centuries to support the treatment of various blood-related conditions, including what is historically described as “blood stasis” and “blood heat-toxicity,” which sometimes overlap conceptually with the modern understanding of “blood poisoning” or sepsis. Historical texts and TCM practitioners describe Danshen as a herb that invigorates blood circulation, disperses blood stasis, and clears toxins, and it has been integrated into complex herbal formulas for conditions presenting with fever, inflammation, and systemic infection.

However, the modern scientific evidence specifically supporting the use of Red-Rooted Sage for sepsis or blood poisoning is limited. Some in vitro and animal studies have investigated components of Danshen, such as tanshinones and salvianolic acids, for their anti-inflammatory and antioxidant properties, and a few studies suggest potential benefits in reducing inflammatory markers. Nevertheless, robust clinical trials in humans demonstrating efficacy specifically for sepsis or blood poisoning are lacking. Therefore, while the use of Red-Rooted Sage for this indication is justified by tradition, the scientific evidence remains weak, and its application should be approached with caution outside of traditional contexts.
