Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Streptomyces is a genus of Gram-positive bacteria well known for its prolific production of antibiotics, many of which have been developed into life-saving medicines for infectious diseases, including sepsis (colloquially referred to as "blood poisoning"). The most notable example is Streptomyces griseus, the source of streptomycin, and Streptomyces venezuelae, the source of chloramphenicol. Additionally, Streptomyces rimosus produces oxytetracycline, and several other species are sources for antibiotics such as vancomycin and daptomycin. These antibiotics have been used extensively in the treatment of bloodstream infections caused by bacteria, which can lead to sepsis. The scientific justification for using compounds derived from Streptomyces against blood poisoning is robust, as these antibiotics have been shown in clinical trials and decades of clinical practice to be effective in eliminating bacterial pathogens from the bloodstream. However, it is important to note that it is not the bacterium itself, but rather its purified and standardized antibiotic products, that are used in therapy. Direct administration of Streptomyces organisms is not a treatment. In summary, while there is strong scientific and historical evidence supporting the use of Streptomyces-derived antibiotics for blood poisoning, the bacterium itself is not directly administered for this condition.
