Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 1

4-DHEA (4-Dehydroepiandrosterone) is a prohormone supplement sometimes used in bodybuilding circles with the intent to enhance muscle mass, strength, and athletic performance. The rationale is that 4-DHEA can convert into testosterone and other androgens in the body, potentially increasing anabolic activity. However, there is very limited direct scientific evidence supporting its efficacy or safety for bodybuilding or athletic enhancement. Most available research and clinical studies have focused on DHEA (the parent compound), not 4-DHEA specifically, and even those results are modest—showing little to no significant benefit for muscle growth or strength in healthy adults. Furthermore, prohormones like 4-DHEA may carry significant health risks, including hormonal imbalances and liver toxicity, especially with long-term or high-dose use. Regulatory agencies such as the FDA have warned against the use of many prohormones due to safety concerns. In summary, while the theoretical mechanism for muscle building exists, scientific validation is lacking, and evidence from well-controlled human studies is minimal to nonexistent. The use of 4-DHEA for bodybuilding is largely based on anecdotal reports and extrapolation from related compounds, not robust scientific research.
