Synopsis

Rating (out of 5): 2

7-Keto (7-oxo-dehydroepiandrosterone-acetate) is a metabolite of DHEA, a hormone naturally produced by the adrenal glands. Its use in bodybuilding is primarily based on its proposed ability to increase metabolism and promote fat loss without converting to testosterone or estrogen. Scientific evidence supporting its efficacy for bodybuilding focuses mainly on its thermogenic (fat-burning) effects rather than direct muscle-building properties. Several small, placebo-controlled studies suggest that 7-keto supplementation may increase resting metabolic rate and promote weight loss when combined with diet and exercise, possibly supporting a leaner physique, which is valued in bodybuilding. For example, a 2007 study in "Current Therapeutic Research" found that 7-keto, combined with exercise and a restricted diet, led to significantly greater weight and fat loss than placebo. However, there is little evidence that 7-keto directly enhances muscle growth, strength, or performance—the key goals in bodybuilding.

Overall, while the ingredient is present in some bodybuilding supplements, its primary justification is modest support for fat loss, not muscle gain. The quality and quantity of human studies are limited, sample sizes are small, and most research spans only a few weeks. The evidence is thus considered weak to moderate (rated 2/5) for bodybuilding purposes, and more robust, long-term studies are needed to confirm its effectiveness and safety in this context.
