Evidence supporting the use of: Alpha glyceryl
For the health condition: Body Building
Synopsis
Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2
Alpha glyceryl, more accurately referred to as alpha-glycerophosphocholine (alpha-GPC), is a choline-containing compound often marketed as a cognitive enhancer and, more recently, as a sports supplement. In the context of bodybuilding, alpha-GPC is purported to enhance power output, increase growth hormone secretion, and support overall athletic performance. The primary scientific rationale for its use stems from a handful of small studies indicating that alpha-GPC supplementation may acutely increase growth hormone secretion and improve lower body force production in resistance-trained individuals. For instance, one study found that 600 mg alpha-GPC taken 90 minutes prior to resistance exercise moderately increased peak bench press force. Another reported a transient rise in growth hormone levels after supplementation.
However, the available clinical evidence is limited—sample sizes are small, study durations are short, and most studies are conducted in young, healthy men. There are also inconsistencies in outcomes, and long-term effects on muscle hypertrophy, strength, or body composition remain unproven. No major adverse effects have been reported in the short term at standard dosages. While the mechanistic rationale (increased acetylcholine availability, potential hormonal effects) is plausible, the evidence supporting meaningful benefits for bodybuilding is weak and preliminary. Therefore, while there is some scientific validation, the overall quality and quantity of evidence justifies a rating of 2 out of 5.
