Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Arginine malate is sometimes used in bodybuilding and sports supplements, primarily due to purported benefits related to nitric oxide (NO) production and enhanced energy metabolism. Arginine is an amino acid that serves as a precursor to NO, a molecule involved in vasodilation, which theoretically could increase blood flow to muscles during exercise, potentially enhancing nutrient delivery and exercise performance. Malate (malic acid) plays a role in the Krebs cycle, which is important for cellular energy production.

However, scientific evidence supporting the efficacy of arginine malate specifically for bodybuilding outcomes—such as increased muscle mass, strength, or significant improvement in exercise performance—is limited and inconsistent. Some clinical studies have evaluated L-arginine supplementation (often at higher doses than found in over-the-counter products), with mixed results regarding improvements in exercise performance, endurance, or recovery. The majority of these studies focus on L-arginine alone or in combination with other ingredients, rather than arginine malate as a distinct compound.

A handful of small studies have shown transient increases in NO markers or subjective improvements in exercise capacity, but larger, well-controlled trials have not established a clear benefit for muscle growth or strength. Furthermore, oral arginine has limited bioavailability, and the body tightly regulates NO production. Thus, while the rationale for use is based on plausible mechanisms, the overall quality and quantity of evidence for arginine malate's effectiveness in bodybuilding is low.
