For the health condition: Body Building
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Ba Ji Tian (Morinda officinalis) is primarily used in Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM), and its application for bodybuilding or muscle strength is grounded in traditional, rather than scientific, rationale. In TCM, Ba Ji Tian is classified as a yang tonic, believed to strengthen the kidneys, improve vitality, and reinforce the bones and tendons. These effects are thought to translate into enhanced physical performance and muscle growth, which is why it is sometimes promoted for bodybuilding or athletic enhancement in the context of traditional herbal practice.
However, scientific studies directly supporting Ba Ji Tian’s effectiveness for muscle building or enhancement of athletic performance are limited. Some preclinical research (mainly in animal studies) suggests that extracts from Morinda officinalis may have androgenic or anabolic effects, potentially influencing testosterone production or muscle strength. Yet, these findings are preliminary and have not been substantiated in well-designed human clinical trials. As such, recommendations for its use in bodybuilding are mostly based on tradition and anecdotal reports rather than robust scientific evidence. Overall, while Ba Ji Tian has a long history of use for vitality and strength in traditional medicine, scientific validation for its direct role in bodybuilding is currently lacking.
