Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Boron is a trace mineral that has attracted interest in the bodybuilding community due to its potential influence on hormone levels, particularly testosterone, which plays a role in muscle growth and recovery. Several small studies have examined boron supplementation and its impact on testosterone. For example, a 2011 study found that healthy male subjects who took 10 mg of boron daily for one week showed a significant increase in free testosterone and a decrease in estrogen levels. However, these studies are limited by their small sample sizes, short durations, and sometimes lack of rigorous controls. There is also some evidence suggesting that boron may reduce inflammatory markers and support bone health, which could indirectly benefit athletes and bodybuilders, but direct evidence supporting its use specifically for muscle building or performance enhancement is weak. Currently, most systematic reviews and expert panels conclude that while boron is essential for health, there is insufficient robust evidence to recommend supplementation for bodybuilding or athletic performance enhancement. Most benefits reported are modest, and more large-scale, long-term studies are needed to draw firm conclusions.
