Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 3

Bovine-derived supplements, particularly bovine colostrum and bovine serum albumin (BSA), have gained popularity in bodybuilding due to their high protein content and bioactive compounds. Scientific evidence suggests some benefits for muscle growth, recovery, and immune function, though findings are mixed and often limited by small study sizes or methodological weaknesses.

Bovine colostrum is rich in immunoglobulins, growth factors (such as IGF-1), and proteins. Several studies have explored colostrum supplementation in athletes. Some randomized controlled trials indicate that colostrum can enhance lean body mass, strength, and exercise performance, as well as reduce gut permeability and support immune health in athletes under intense training. However, other studies have found no significant advantages over standard whey protein.

Bovine serum albumin is a high-quality protein source with an excellent amino acid profile, supporting muscle protein synthesis. It is sometimes included in protein powders or meal replacements for bodybuilders. While its protein quality is recognized, there is limited direct evidence that BSA outperforms other standard proteins like whey for muscle building in healthy adults.

In summary, there is moderate scientific support for the use of certain bovine-derived ingredients in bodybuilding, primarily due to their protein content and potential bioactive effects. However, evidence is not universally strong and does not suggest they are superior to more conventional sources such as whey protein.
