Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Brewer's yeast has a long history of traditional use as a nutritional supplement, particularly among bodybuilders and athletes. It is valued for its rich content of B vitamins (especially B1, B2, B3, B5, B6, B7, and B9), protein, and trace minerals such as chromium and selenium. The rationale is that these nutrients may help support energy production and muscle recovery, both important aspects of bodybuilding. Brewer's yeast contains about 40-50% protein by weight, making it a potential supplementary source of protein for muscle growth. However, while this traditional use is widespread, robust scientific studies directly linking brewer's yeast supplementation to improved muscle growth, strength, or bodybuilding outcomes are lacking.

Most available evidence focuses on its role in general nutrition and possible effects on glycemic control (due to the chromium content), but not specifically on muscle hypertrophy or enhanced performance in athletes. Thus, while it is nutrient-dense and may help correct deficiencies in some individuals, there is little high-quality clinical evidence to support the idea that it specifically enhances muscle building in healthy, well-nourished adults. The evidence rating is therefore moderate for its nutritional value, but weak for direct bodybuilding benefits.
