Ecdysteroids, such as 20-hydroxyecdysone, are naturally occurring steroid hormones found primarily in insects and some plants (notably spinach and Rhaponticum carthamoides, also called Leuzea or Maral root). Their use in bodybuilding is based on claims that they can enhance muscle growth and improve physical performance without the side effects associated with anabolic-androgenic steroids. Some animal studies have demonstrated anabolic effects, such as increased protein synthesis and muscle mass, particularly in rodents. More recently, a few small human studies have suggested that ecdysteroids may have a positive effect on muscle mass and strength. For example, a 2019 randomized controlled trial published in "Archives of Toxicology" reported increased muscle mass and strength in young men consuming ecdysterone supplements compared to placebo. However, the number of robust, well-controlled human trials is limited, sample sizes are small, and results are not always consistent. There are also questions about dosing, bioavailability, and long-term safety. While not a traditional remedy for bodybuilding, there is some preliminary scientific evidence supporting ecdysteroids’ potential anabolic effects. However, due to the limited and mixed quality of the data, the overall evidence remains weak to moderate (rated 2/5). More large-scale, rigorous clinical trials are needed to confirm efficacy and safety for bodybuilding purposes.
