Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Forskolin is a plant-derived compound traditionally used in Ayurvedic medicine, but its use in bodybuilding and fat loss is based primarily on recent scientific interest. Forskolin activates the enzyme adenylate cyclase, increasing intracellular levels of cyclic AMP (cAMP), which theoretically could promote fat loss and muscle preservation. A few small human studies have investigated Forskolin’s effects on body composition and testosterone levels. For example, a 2005 double-blind, placebo-controlled study in overweight and obese men found that 250 mg of 10% Forskolin extract taken twice daily for 12 weeks led to a significant decrease in body fat percentage and fat mass, and a reported increase in lean body mass compared to placebo. Another study in overweight women found no significant changes in body composition. Overall, the evidence is limited by small sample sizes, short durations, some methodological weaknesses, and inconsistent results. There is not enough robust clinical evidence to firmly recommend Forskolin as an effective bodybuilding or fat loss supplement. Its use in bodybuilding is thus weakly justified by limited scientific data and not strongly supported by tradition or a large body of clinical research.
