Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Glutamine is an amino acid that is naturally abundant in the body and plays several roles in metabolism, immune function, and gut health. Its use in bodybuilding is based on the premise that intense exercise can deplete glutamine levels, and supplementation may aid recovery, reduce muscle soreness, and support immune function. Several small studies have examined glutamine supplementation in athletes and bodybuilders. The bulk of these studies, however, show little to no significant effect on muscle mass gain, strength, or performance compared to placebo. Some evidence suggests a possible benefit in reducing muscle soreness and supporting immune health during periods of intense training, but effects are generally modest and inconsistent.

Reviews and meta-analyses, including a 2019 systematic review in Nutrients, conclude that glutamine supplementation does not appear to increase muscle mass or improve strength in resistance-trained individuals. Its main scientifically validated uses are in clinical settings (e.g., supporting gut health in critically ill patients), not in athletic performance. Thus, while some bodybuilders use glutamine, the evidence supporting its efficacy for muscle building is limited, and it is rated low for this purpose.
