Ibutamoren (also known as MK-677) is a non-peptide growth hormone secretagogue that stimulates the secretion of growth hormone (GH) and increases insulin-like growth factor 1 (IGF-1) levels in the body. Scientific research has demonstrated that ibutamoren can increase lean body mass in both healthy adults and individuals with GH deficiency. Several clinical studies have shown significant increases in GH and IGF-1 following ibutamoren administration, which are hormones associated with muscle growth, fat metabolism, and recovery—key factors relevant to bodybuilding. For example, a randomized controlled trial in healthy elderly subjects showed that ibutamoren increased lean mass without significantly affecting fat mass (J Clin Endocrinol Metab, 2008). Another study in young men found increased GH and IGF-1 levels and a positive nitrogen balance, indicating an anabolic effect.

However, there is limited direct evidence supporting the use of ibutamoren specifically for bodybuilding purposes in healthy, athletic populations. Most studies have focused on elderly subjects, those with hormone deficiencies, or clinical populations. The increase in lean mass does not always translate directly into increased muscle strength or performance, and the long-term safety profile of ibutamoren for non-medical use remains unclear. Despite promising mechanisms and some supportive evidence, more research is needed to determine its true efficacy and safety in bodybuilding and athletic enhancement settings.
