Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 4

Propionate esters are commonly used in the context of bodybuilding as the esterified form of certain anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), most notably testosterone propionate. The esterification (adding a propionate group) modifies the pharmacokinetics of the steroid, allowing for a slower release from the injection site and extending its half-life compared to the non-esterified hormone. Testosterone propionate, for example, is a well-studied compound that has been used in clinical medicine since the 1930s and is known to increase muscle mass, strength, and protein synthesis via activation of androgen receptors. These effects are scientifically validated, as exogenous testosterone administration (including as a propionate ester) results in marked anabolic (muscle-building) effects, which is why such preparations are sometimes misused by athletes and bodybuilders to enhance physique and performance. Numerous clinical studies in hypogonadal men and in athletes have demonstrated significant increases in lean body mass, muscle size, and strength when using anabolic steroids, including propionate esters. However, it is important to note that such use is not medically approved for bodybuilding, carries significant health risks (cardiovascular, endocrine, psychiatric, etc.), and is generally banned in sports. The scientific evidence for anabolic effects is robust, but therapeutic use for bodybuilding is not sanctioned or recommended due to safety and ethical concerns.
