Evidence supporting the use of: Protodioscin
For the health condition: Body Building
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Protodioscin is a steroidal saponin found primarily in the plant Tribulus terrestris, which has a long history of use in traditional medicine systems, especially in Ayurveda and Traditional Chinese Medicine. It has historically been used as a tonic for male vitality, libido, and overall physical strength. In the context of bodybuilding, its use is primarily based on the traditional belief that it can enhance testosterone levels and thereby improve muscle mass, strength, and athletic performance.
However, the scientific evidence supporting these claims is limited and not robust. Some in vitro and animal studies suggest that protodioscin may have an effect on androgen levels, but well-designed human clinical trials have largely failed to demonstrate significant improvements in testosterone levels or muscle growth in healthy adults. Most studies investigating Tribulus terrestris supplements (which contain protodioscin) for athletic performance or body composition have shown no significant benefit compared to placebo. As such, its use in bodybuilding is primarily justified by traditional use and anecdotal reports rather than solid scientific validation.
In summary, while protodioscin is widely marketed for bodybuilding, this is based more on traditional use and marketing than on convincing scientific evidence.
