Testes, specifically in the form of testosterone derived from testicular tissue or as synthetic analogs, have a well-established scientific basis for their use in bodybuilding. Testosterone is the primary male sex hormone produced by the testes, and it plays a crucial role in muscle growth, protein synthesis, and the development of male secondary sexual characteristics. The use of exogenous testosterone and anabolic-androgenic steroids (AAS), which are often synthetic derivatives of testosterone, is common among bodybuilders seeking to enhance muscle mass, strength, and recovery. Multiple clinical studies have demonstrated that testosterone supplementation in hypogonadal men leads to increases in lean body mass and muscle strength. In healthy subjects, supraphysiological doses of testosterone and its analogs have shown significant anabolic effects on muscle size and performance. However, while these effects are well-documented, the use of exogenous testosterone for bodybuilding purposes is not without risks, including cardiovascular, hepatic, and endocrine side effects. Furthermore, such use is considered illegal without a prescription and is banned by most athletic organizations. Historically, even before the isolation and synthesis of testosterone in the 1930s, extracts of animal testes were used in attempts to treat various conditions, but modern bodybuilding relies on the scientific understanding of testosterone's anabolic effects rather than historical tradition. Thus, the evidence supporting the use of testes-derived compounds in bodybuilding is robust and grounded in scientific research.
