Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Valine is one of the three branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), along with leucine and isoleucine, which play a role in muscle metabolism and exercise performance. Its inclusion in bodybuilding supplements is based on its essential nature (cannot be synthesized by the body) and its involvement in muscle protein synthesis. However, most of the scientific focus has been on BCAAs as a group, or specifically on leucine, which has a more direct role in stimulating muscle protein synthesis via the mTOR pathway. While valine is necessary for overall protein synthesis and muscle tissue repair, clinical studies specifically examining valine supplementation alone for bodybuilding benefits are limited. Most research shows only modest improvements in muscle fatigue and recovery, and these effects are not consistently observed in all studies. The evidence supporting valine as a standalone supplement for muscle growth or enhanced body composition is therefore weak, but it is commonly included in BCAA blends due to its essential amino acid status. In summary, while there is a scientific rationale for valine’s inclusion in bodybuilding supplements as part of BCAAs, the direct evidence for its efficacy in enhancing muscle growth or athletic performance is limited, resulting in a moderate evidence rating.
