Synopsis

Source of validity: Scientific
Rating (out of 5): 2

Vitamin C is commonly used by bodybuilders and athletes due to its role as an antioxidant and its involvement in collagen synthesis. Scientifically, Vitamin C helps reduce oxidative stress caused by intense exercise, as heavy training increases the production of free radicals. Some studies have shown that Vitamin C supplementation can reduce muscle soreness and accelerate recovery, but the effects are generally modest. There is also evidence that Vitamin C supports immune function, which is relevant for athletes undergoing intense training that may temporarily suppress immune defenses.

However, the evidence supporting Vitamin C supplementation for muscle growth, strength enhancement, or significant recovery improvement is limited. High doses of antioxidant vitamins, including Vitamin C, have even been shown in some studies to blunt some of the beneficial adaptations to strength training, potentially interfering with muscle hypertrophy and endurance improvements. Most benefits are observed in individuals with a deficiency; for those with adequate dietary intake, additional supplementation offers minimal benefit. In summary, while Vitamin C has a clear biological rationale for use in supporting overall health in athletes, the scientific evidence specifically supporting its use for significant improvements in bodybuilding outcomes is weak.
