Alchornea cordifolia has a long history of use in traditional African medicine for the treatment of skin infections, including boils. Ethnobotanical surveys from various regions in West and Central Africa report the use of Alchornea cordifolia leaves, either as poultices or decoctions, applied topically to boils, abscesses, and similar skin lesions. The main rationale in traditional practice is its perceived antiseptic and anti-inflammatory effects. While there are a few laboratory studies indicating that extracts from Alchornea cordifolia possess antimicrobial properties against some bacteria associated with skin infections (such as Staphylococcus aureus), these findings are preliminary and largely in vitro. There is a lack of robust clinical trials or controlled studies specifically investigating its efficacy in treating boils in humans. Therefore, the use of Alchornea cordifolia for boils is primarily justified by traditional knowledge, with some low-level scientific support for its antimicrobial potential, but insufficient evidence for clinical effectiveness or safety in this context.
