Artemisia species, such as Artemisia vulgaris (mugwort) and Artemisia absinthium (wormwood), have a long history of use in traditional medicine across various cultures. In traditional Chinese medicine, and in folk medicine practices in Europe and the Middle East, Artemisia preparations have been used topically and internally for their purported antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Specifically, poultices or washes made from Artemisia have been applied to skin infections, including boils (furuncles), to help draw out pus, reduce swelling, and promote healing. The rationale in these traditions is based on the bitter principles, essential oils, and other phytochemicals present in Artemisia, which are believed to inhibit infection and support tissue repair. However, there is limited direct scientific research validating these traditional uses for boils specifically. While some Artemisia species have demonstrated antimicrobial activity in vitro, these studies do not directly address efficacy in treating boils in humans. Clinical trials or well-designed observational studies investigating Artemisia for this indication are lacking. As such, the use of Artemisia for boils is primarily justified by tradition, with some indirect support from laboratory research suggesting possible mechanisms of action.
