Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1

Black-Eyed Susan (Rudbeckia hirta) has been traditionally used in some Native American herbal practices, particularly by the Ojibwa and other North American tribes, as a remedy for various infections and inflammatory conditions, including boils and wounds. The roots were often prepared in teas or poultices applied externally to promote healing of skin lesions and abscesses. However, the evidence supporting this use is primarily anecdotal and rooted in ethnobotanical traditions rather than systematic scientific research.

To date, there are very limited pharmacological studies on Black-Eyed Susan's antimicrobial or anti-inflammatory properties, and it is not a well-studied herb in modern phytotherapy. The medicinal use for boils, therefore, relies on historical accounts of indigenous use, with a lack of clinical trials or rigorous laboratory data to confirm efficacy. In the absence of robust scientific validation, its use is considered traditional, and any benefit is not well substantiated in the biomedical literature. The evidence rating is low due to the scarcity of modern research.
