Evidence supporting the use of: Ghee
For the health condition: Boils
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 1
Ghee, a type of clarified butter commonly used in South Asian cuisine and Ayurvedic medicine, has traditionally been applied to skin conditions, including boils. In Ayurveda, ghee is believed to have soothing, cooling, and healing properties, and is often used as a carrier for herbal preparations applied to the skin. There are various traditional remedies where ghee is mixed with herbs or other substances and applied topically to help "draw out" impurities and promote healing of boils and other skin abscesses. However, scientific validation for this practice is limited. There is little modern clinical research to support the efficacy of ghee specifically for the treatment of boils, and most evidence comes from anecdotal or traditional sources rather than controlled studies. Ghee does possess some anti-inflammatory and moisturizing properties, which could theoretically offer minor soothing benefits, but it lacks the proven antibacterial activity needed to effectively treat bacterial infections like boils. Thus, while ghee's use for boils is well-rooted in traditional medicine, current scientific evidence is minimal, and conventional medical treatments (such as antibiotics or incision and drainage when appropriate) remain the recommended approach.
