Evidence supporting the use of: Myrrh
For the health condition: Boils
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Myrrh has a long history of traditional use in the treatment of skin ailments, including boils. In traditional medicine systems, such as Traditional Chinese Medicine and Ayurveda, myrrh is valued for its purported antimicrobial, anti-inflammatory, and wound-healing properties. Historical texts and herbal compendia note that myrrh resin was often applied topically to infected wounds, sores, and boils to promote healing and reduce infection risk. The rationale behind its use is primarily due to its aromatic resins, which contain compounds believed to have antiseptic qualities.
Modern scientific studies on myrrh’s efficacy specifically for boils are limited. Some laboratory research indicates that myrrh extracts possess antimicrobial activity against various bacteria and fungi, which could theoretically help with skin infections. However, there are no robust clinical trials directly evaluating myrrh's effect on boils in humans. Thus, while tradition strongly supports its use and there is some preliminary scientific plausibility, the clinical evidence base remains weak. Its rating is therefore a 2, reflecting strong tradition, some in vitro support, but a lack of direct clinical validation.
