Evidence supporting the use of: Sanguisorba
For the health condition: Boils
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Sanguisorba, commonly known as burnet, has a longstanding history in traditional medicine, particularly in East Asian herbal practice, for the treatment of skin conditions such as boils, abscesses, and other inflammatory skin lesions. In traditional Chinese medicine (TCM), the root of Sanguisorba officinalis (Di Yu) is used for its purported "cooling" and "detoxifying" properties, believed to help resolve heat and toxins associated with boils and other skin eruptions. Ancient materia medica texts and herbal compendiums reference its topical and internal use for these indications. However, scientific evidence to support these traditional claims is limited. While some laboratory studies have identified anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties in Sanguisorba extracts, these findings are preliminary and mainly in vitro. There are no robust clinical trials or modern pharmacological studies specifically confirming its efficacy for treating boils in humans. Therefore, the use of Sanguisorba for boils is primarily justified by tradition, with only modest supporting evidence from laboratory research and no high-quality clinical studies to validate its effectiveness for this indication as of current knowledge (2024).
