Synopsis

Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2

Ashitaba (Angelica keiskei), a plant native to Japan, has been used in traditional Japanese and Chinese herbal medicine for centuries. It is primarily believed to support general vitality and longevity, and some traditional practices suggest it may help with cognitive function and overall brain health. The basis for its use in supporting the brain-body system comes from its rich content of chalcones, coumarins, and other bioactive compounds, which are thought to possess antioxidant and neuroprotective properties. However, while these traditional claims are long-standing, there is limited direct scientific evidence specifically validating the effects of ashitaba on cognitive function or neurological health in humans. Most current research is preliminary and consists of in vitro (cell-based) or animal studies showing some neuroprotective and anti-inflammatory effects, but human clinical trials are lacking. As a result, the justification for using ashitaba to support the brain-body system is primarily traditional, with the scientific evidence base still developing and not yet robust.
