Evidence supporting the use of: Kachnar
For the health condition: Breast Lumps
Synopsis
Source of validity: Traditional
Rating (out of 5): 2
Kachnar (Bauhinia variegata) is traditionally used in Ayurveda for the management of various glandular swellings, including breast lumps, which are referred to as "Granthi" or "Arbuda" in classical Ayurvedic texts. The Kachnar Guggulu formulation, which contains Kachnar as a key ingredient, is often prescribed for conditions involving abnormal tissue growths, cysts, and glandular enlargements. Historical Ayurvedic literature attributes properties such as "Lekhana" (scraping) and "Shothahara" (anti-inflammatory) to Kachnar, suggesting its role in reducing swellings and abnormal masses.
However, modern scientific validation for these uses is limited. A few preclinical studies suggest that Bauhinia variegata extracts may possess anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, and antiproliferative activities, but there is currently no robust clinical evidence specifically supporting its efficacy in treating benign or malignant breast lumps in humans. The majority of support for this application comes from traditional usage and empirical evidence within the Ayurvedic system. Therefore, while Kachnar does have a historical basis for use in the treatment of breast lumps, high-quality clinical trials are lacking, and its use for this indication remains primarily traditional rather than scientifically validated.
