Chastetree (Vitex agnus-castus), also known as chasteberry, has traditional and scientific associations with supporting breast health, particularly in relation to premenstrual breast discomfort (mastalgia). Its primary mechanism is thought to involve modulation of prolactin and other reproductive hormones through dopaminergic effects on the pituitary gland. Several clinical studies, including randomized controlled trials, have demonstrated that Vitex agnus-castus extract can reduce cyclical mastalgia and other premenstrual symptoms. For example, a systematic review published in Phytomedicine (2013) concluded that Vitex is effective for premenstrual syndrome (PMS) symptoms, including breast tenderness. The German Commission E also approves its use for menstrual cycle irregularities and mastodynia. While the majority of evidence is related to symptom relief rather than direct structural support of the breast tissue, the reduction in mastalgia and improvement of hormonal balance are considered supportive for the breast system in a clinical context. However, more high-quality, large-scale studies are needed to confirm these findings and better understand long-term safety and efficacy.
